Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, a reusable marvel, has successfully launched NASA's ESCAPADE mission to Mars, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. The journey began at 3:55 p.m. Eastern Time, as the New Glenn rocket soared from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. A few minutes into the flight, Blue Origin confirmed the main engine cut-off and stage separation, setting the stage for a successful mission.

The rocket's second stage and payload continued their journey towards Mars, carrying NASA's ESCAPADE twin spacecraft. This mission is a testament to the power of collaboration, as it involves a technology demonstration from U.S. communications company Viasat, supporting NASA's Communications Services Project.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this launch was the successful recovery of the first-stage booster. During the final descent, the three middle BE-4 engines reignited, providing the necessary deceleration for a smooth landing on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean, several hundred miles downrange.

The ESCAPADE spacecraft will enter a unique Earth-proximity orbit, spending approximately a year in this phase before a critical trans-Mars injection engine burn in November 2026. The spacecraft is expected to arrive at Mars in September 2027, where it will be captured in a large orbit. Mission teams will then synchronize the spacecraft's orbits, paving the way for the science mission, scheduled to commence in spring 2028.
