A devastating tragedy has shaken the remote Indigenous community of Doomadgee in Northwest Queensland, leaving a mother and her 10-year-old daughter dead and three other children injured. But here's where it gets even more heartbreaking: the man arrested in connection with the crash is reportedly the father or stepfather of the children involved. The fatal collision occurred on Doomadgee Road just after 6:30 a.m. on Friday, involving a black 2011 Nissan Maxima and a white 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser. The 30-year-old driver of the Land Cruiser, a woman from Cloncurry, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her young daughter was rushed to Doomadgee Hospital but tragically pronounced dead shortly after. Three other children—aged one, three, and four—were also injured, with one remaining in critical condition.
And this is the part most people miss: the 28-year-old driver of the Nissan, now in custody, was known to the victims. Acting Superintendent Paul Austin revealed that the man had been in a relationship with the deceased woman, raising alarming questions about the circumstances leading up to the crash. Investigators are actively exploring whether domestic violence played a role, though Austin emphasized it’s too early to confirm the cause.
The crash site has been declared a crime scene, with forensic investigators meticulously combing through debris and evidence. Photos released by police show both vehicles extensively damaged, with shattered windscreens and deployed airbags—a stark reminder of the collision’s severity. “The images are confronting,” Supt Austin acknowledged, “but we hope they’ll aid our investigation and help us piece together what happened.”
Police are urging anyone who saw either vehicle in the days or hours leading up to the crash, or who interacted with the occupants, to come forward. “Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be crucial,” Supt Austin said.
