A heart-wrenching moment for Lewis Hamilton and the entire Ferrari team unfolded at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Hamilton's race ended prematurely due to unmanageable car damage, leaving him feeling 'terrible' for his team's misfortune.
The Briton's weekend started on a challenging note, failing to qualify within the top 10 positions. Starting from P13, he faced an uphill battle from the get-go. As the race commenced, Hamilton made a strong initial getaway but had to abort an overtake attempt on Fernando Alonso at Turn 1, setting the tone for a chaotic first lap.
The chaos continued as Carlos Sainz made contact with Hamilton's Ferrari, causing damage to the rear wheel. Hamilton reported instability in the rear of his car, a concern that only intensified as the race progressed. After a collision with Franco Colapinto's Alpine, resulting in Colapinto losing his front wing, Ferrari confirmed over the radio that there was significant damage to the floor of Hamilton's car.
Despite Hamilton's valiant efforts to manage the damage for 38 laps, he was eventually instructed to retire the car. Post-race, he explained the feeling of a broken rear suspension, though the team assured him it was intact. However, the loss of downforce, estimated at 30-40 points, made the car unstable at high speeds.
"I was giving everything to keep up with the guys ahead," Hamilton said, his frustration palpable. His struggles were evident as the car slid uncontrollably across the track.
Adding to Ferrari's woes, Charles Leclerc also retired due to damage caused by an incident involving Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli. This double retirement dealt a significant blow to Ferrari's constructors' standings, dropping them 36 points behind Mercedes and four points behind Red Bull with only three rounds left.
"This is a weekend we'd rather forget," Hamilton reflected. "I love Brazil and the team, and everyone gives their all every week. To not finish a race for the second time this year is truly devastating. I'm sorry for my part in Qualifying, but we'll pick ourselves up and try again."
